For Parents – Why “Confirmation”
We realize that Confirmation isn’t part of most people’s experience, so you might want to know what it is. Confirmation is both a ritual that has been around in some Christian churches for centuries, and a resource that can still significantly impact a student’s life.
As a ritual, Confirmation serves as a rite of passage, recognizing that at some point we no longer rely on our parents’ faith but begin to develop our own. Confirmation isn’t an endpoint—it’s just one more step on the journey we all take in wrestling with the questions of life. As a ritual, it celebrates both the student and their individual journey. It’s a chance to once again hear God’s promise in baptism “you belong”.
As a resource, Confirmation offers what we all need to refine and shape our identity—an opportunity to be a part of a community. While a family is still the number one influence on most students, current research is showing that faith communities have a measurable impact. Did you know that people who participate in a faith community are more likely to vote, to volunteer, to let your car merge in front of theirs on the freeway? Take a look at this report to find out more.
If you’re hoping that a year of Confirmation will pound some religion into your kid, this isn’t the program for you (you wouldn’t be here at St. Matthew’s if that’s what you want, right?) But if you want a chance for your daughter or son to experience life in a community of faith, share some of the stories that have shaped that community, have some fun, and wrestle with some of life’s hard questions, join us. And check out the classes for parents—there’s fun in store for you too!
