Wednesday Night Summer Worship

Please join us starting July 7 at 7pm for Wednesday evening worship! We all know summer can get a little crazy, and so a little quiet church time can do a family good. There is nursery available, and kid’s activities at the family friendy worship service.

The service itself if called the “Chicago Folk Service” – written in the 70’s and totally “rad.” If you’re a fan of Holden Evening Prayer, this service is very much like it – with a kick! We will be having communion every week, and the sermon time will be more interactive than a regular Sunday morning service.

So please plan to join us! We’d love to see you.

Oh! If you’re interested in helping out with welcoming, set up, kid’s stuff, or music, please let me know!

Compass Veteran’s Center Matching Funds

A member of St. Matthews has generously designated $7,000 to be used to match your gifts to the Compass Veteran’s Center. By collecting the additional $7,000, we will be able as a congregation to sponsor two Studio Apartments ($2,000 each) and two Family Apartments ($5,000 each). Please join us in providing a home for our veterans!

To be recognized for matching funds, please send your check to SMLC, including the notation “Veteran’s housing”. You can also provide a welcome to the vets by getting involved in one of the “welcome” projects; more information is found in the brochure in the church entryway.

Luther’s Table . . .You are Invited to Provide the Tables

. . .Or the chairs, or plates, or a piece of equipment for the kitchen! A variety of items are needed, and you can “purchase” some of those items for Luther’s Table through your donations. We will buy the items in quantity to get the best discounts, so donations of any size are encouraged! Please give generously now, so that we are able to open this fall!

What do we need? Items that cost as little as a place setting of silverware ($4) all the way up to an Espresso/Cappucino Machine ($4,415) and beyond! Realistically, we hope to generate $60, 000 through an appeal to churches in the Renton/Kent area. These donations would cover about 6% of the total cost of the project. Any help you can give is appreciated.

Luther’s Table and Compass Veteran’s Housing Appeal

Construction is progressing on the building that will house two new ministries this fall, Luther’s Table and the Compass Veteran’s Housing. While St. Matthew’s is only responsible for Luther’s Table, we consider the Compass Housing Alliance to be a very close partner in ministry, so when it came time to raise funds for Luther’s Table, we wanted people to have a chance to donate to either or both. You can find out more about these ministries by picking up the brochures on the new tables in the church entryway. You will also find instructions on how to donate or get involved on those tables. In addition, you can donate by going online to www.smlc.cc and scrolling down to “Simply Giving”.

Special Thanks to our Treasurers

Jim Kraus has been serving as Treasurer at SMLC for the last year, and has done a fantastic job following in Barb Newton’s footsteps. He’s helped us improve the systems we have in place, and has advised the Council on finances. He’s found, though, that the timing of the work conflicts with the needs of his “real” (meaning paid) job, and so is in the process of training our new Treasurer, Leighton Lien.

You may remember Leighton from the past several annual meetings, where he has displayed his ability with numbers in the presentation of the budget. He has also served on the church’s Audit Committee, and is on the Council (and in choir, and plays handbells . . .)

Thanks to both Jim and Leighton for your work; long hours at no pay, but you have made a huge difference here at St. Matthew’s!
