The service itself if called the “Chicago Folk Service” – written in the 70’s and totally “rad.” If you’re a fan of Holden Evening Prayer, this service is very much like it – with a kick! We will be having communion every week, and the sermon time will be more interactive than a regular Sunday morning service.

So please plan to join us! We’d love to see you.

Oh! If you’re interested in helping out with welcoming, set up, kid’s stuff, or music, please let me know!

See you Wednesday!

To be recognized for matching funds, please send your check to SMLC, including the notation “Veteran’s housing”. You can also provide a welcome to the vets by getting involved in one of the “welcome” projects; more information is found in the brochure in the church entryway.

. . .Or the chairs, or plates, or a piece of equipment for the kitchen! A variety of items are needed, and you can “purchase” some of those items for Luther’s Table through your donations. We will buy the items in quantity to get the best discounts, so donations of any size are encouraged! Please give generously now, so that we are able to open this fall!

What do we need? Items that cost as little as a place setting of silverware ($4) all the way up to an Espresso/Cappucino Machine ($4,415) and beyond! Realistically, we hope to generate $60, 000 through an appeal to churches in the Renton/Kent area. These donations would cover about 6% of the total cost of the project. Any help you can give is appreciated.

Find your way to the display in the narthex/entryway to find out more information.

Construction is progressing on the building that will house two new ministries this fall, Luther’s Table and the Compass Veteran’s Housing. While St. Matthew’s is only responsible for Luther’s Table, we consider the Compass Housing Alliance to be a very close partner in ministry, so when it came time to raise funds for Luther’s Table, we wanted people to have a chance to donate to either or both. You can find out more about these ministries by picking up the brochures on the new tables in the church entryway. You will also find instructions on how to donate or get involved on those tables. In addition, you can donate by going online to www.smlc.cc and scrolling down to “Simply Giving”.

In the past, giving to the church was usually as simple as putting your contribution in the offering plate, using your offering envelope (or not) with a personal check or cash. There are a lot more options available today and SMLC is trying to keep up, first by using the Simply Giving program developed by Thrivent and more recently by expanding the Simply Giving options to include internet access.

For several years prior to August 2009, Simply Giving was used by submitting a form and voided check to the SMLC office. This information was then forwarded to the plan administrators and periodic gifts were set up to be deducted from your account as directed; to change amounts or timing of gifts, a new form and voided check had to be submitted. In August 2009 we had around 55 users of Simply Giving representing about $12000 per month in contributions.

After August 2009, Simply Giving was changed to allow internet access via SMLCs website. Users could then set up an access account and log in to set up gifts, change bank account information or change gift amounts using electronic transfers from their bank or credit cards by interfacing directly with the plan administrators. We currently have around 70 users representing about $25000 per month in contributions (almost 40% of our budgeted donations). Contributors using the website for giving represent about 40% of all SMLC Simply Giving users (the rest continue to use the traditional program with forms submitted through SMLC).

Web site administration costs SMLC $20 per month, with individual transactions charged at $0.20 per transaction (less than the bank charges SMLC to process a hand-written check). Note that credit card use does incur an additional 2.65% fee (just like regular merchants pay a discount fee for accepting credit cards).

Based on the increased use of Simply Giving with the web site access, the Council has agreed to continue using this feature of the program. The Council feels one important aspect of giving is to make regular gifts regardless of the size and Simply Giving is one way to encourage that as weekly, biweekly or monthly gifts are automatic deducted whether you miss a week at church or forget your checkbook.

Future changes to the program may include allowing for more types of payments/contributions (like class registrations or special appeal funds) or maybe even a card swiping maching in the narthex for one-time gifts on Sunday. Please contact a Council member with any questions or comments.
