Side by Side ministry is exactly what we do. We’re a trained team of caring people who walk alongside those who are in crisis due to health, family, job, and LIFE. St. Matthew Lutheran embraces everyone’s story and strives to connect with people in the midst of their struggles and joys. Side by Side is a ministry that connects trained volunteers with those who are looking to share and find support during difficult times. A side by side volunteer is carefully matched with someone who needs and wants a listening ear. Watch for more information as this new ministry unfolds.
If you are interested in becoming a Side by Side volunteer, or if you would like to meet with a Side By Side Volunteer, please contact the Side By Side Coordinator, Joan Stewart, joan.stewart3@comcast.net or 425-226-2420.
Thoughts from a Side By Side (formerly Stephen Ministry) recipient
When I contacted SMLC’s Stephen Ministry I knew that I needed someone to talk to, but I didn’t know what a positive and profound effect it would have on my life. Having a caring person hold my hand through my darkest days gave me the strength and confidence I needed to move forward. Stephen Ministry enriched my life and is a blessing I’ll always be grateful for.

Just in time for Christmas, your Mission Endowment Fund (MEF) has awarded 2011 gifts of $500 each to the SMLC After School Program, Luther’s Table, and Grace Chinese South King County. The Renton Community Foundation portion of the investment (about half) returned about 2.5% this year, and the fixed income portion invested with the ELCA Mission Investment Fund earned 1.3%. However, even with these relatively low rates of return your MEF was able to make these gifts. Please remember your SMLC MEF as you do your estate planning and writing of wills. Further details about the MEF are available at the display in the church entryway.

Each week we gather and hear words from this book. Where does it come from? Why don’t we agree about what it means? Did a whale really swallow Jonah? How is it that this book impacts my life today? (Hint: We can’t answer that for you but can help you figure it out yourself!) If you feel like you’re just getting started with the book (and who isn’t?) then join this three week exploration of the Bible. Wednesdays 7-8:15pm 11/2, 11/9, 11/16. Sign up at the Welcome Desk to help us prepare. Childcare is available.
