Luther’s Table . . .You are Invited to Provide the Tables

. . .Or the chairs, or plates, or a piece of equipment for the kitchen! A variety of items are needed, and you can “purchase” some of those items for Luther’s Table through your donations. We will buy the items in quantity to get the best discounts, so donations of any size are encouraged! Please give generously now, so that we are able to open this fall!

What do we need? Items that cost as little as a place setting of silverware ($4) all the way up to an Espresso/Cappucino Machine ($4,415) and beyond! Realistically, we hope to generate $60, 000 through an appeal to churches in the Renton/Kent area. These donations would cover about 6% of the total cost of the project. Any help you can give is appreciated.

Luther’s Table and Compass Veteran’s Housing Appeal

Construction is progressing on the building that will house two new ministries this fall, Luther’s Table and the Compass Veteran’s Housing. While St. Matthew’s is only responsible for Luther’s Table, we consider the Compass Housing Alliance to be a very close partner in ministry, so when it came time to raise funds for Luther’s Table, we wanted people to have a chance to donate to either or both. You can find out more about these ministries by picking up the brochures on the new tables in the church entryway. You will also find instructions on how to donate or get involved on those tables. In addition, you can donate by going online to www.smlc.cc and scrolling down to “Simply Giving”.

Thrivent Members: a new way to help Luther’s Table

Thrivent Financial for Lutheran is launching a new charitable grant program called Thrivent Choice^SM. If you are a Thrivent member, watch your mail at the end of the month for further information, including how you can direct Thrivent Choice^SMdollars to SMLC for Luther’s Table.
Thrivent Financial member eligibility will be based on fraternal benefit society product ownership and Thrivent Financial volunteer leadership. Helping direct Choice Dollars will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Thrivent Choice^SM program.

Brick Cleaning at Luther’s Table

Hey all -

We’re looking for a few good people with hammers to come down to the construction site this Saturday, 2/20 at 8:00 am to scrape some mortar off some bricks. The bricks are from Renton Lutheran Church and are going to be reused in the cafe as decorative facade walls. Very cool!

If you’re interested, just show up on Saturday in appropriate work clothes with a hammer and gloves!

Luther's Table, Artist's Rendering

Luther’s Table is a new ministry of the ELCA, and it looks like nothing you’ve ever seen before. A coffee shop/bakery by day, and a music venue/pub by night, you won’t find any pews here. And that’s a big part of the idea – creating community among those for whom church is a challenge, an offense, or just not up their alley. We’re experimenting with grace to see how far it can really go. One of the core tenets of the Christian church is to share Christ’s meal together, to eat and drink together. Luther’s Table is built around the idea that community, trust, conversation, and faith are found around the dinner table. We’re trying to bring Christ’s meal outside of the walls of the church, and serve it up with generosity where the people already are: downtown, at the local watering hole.

We are attempting to reclaim the secular as sacred space. We are going to be modeling moderation, and teaching through example that yes, we are sinners, but by the grace of God we are also saints. We are following Christ’s example of eating and drinking with the people, and walking along side them in their lives, and on their journey of faith. We are widening the walls of the church, and practicing being sent out into the world.
